Deputy Director for Operations and Chief Operating Officer Michael Brandt oversees Berkeley Lab’s operations and mission support organizations and programs. Before joining the Lab in March of 2018, Brandt was the Associate Director of Environment, Safety, and Health for Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he led an organization of 750 employees with an operating budget of $150 million. Brandt has more than 30 years of progressively increasing responsibility and accountability for business services; environment, safety, and health; facilities; enterprise risk management; and operations. He holds doctoral and master’s degrees in public health from the University of Michigan, a master’s degree in environmental health and industrial hygiene from the University of Minnesota, and a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University.

Chief Financial Officer Kim Williams is responsible for Berkeley Lab’s fiduciary, financial, procurement, and property management systems. She joined Berkeley Lab in 2006 as the division deputy for Operations in the Environmental Energy Technologies Division. Prior to joining the Lab, she held executive management and chief financial officer positions with financial and academic organizations, including the Pacific Stock Exchange. Her experience also includes leadership of strategic initiatives and management of contracts and grants; business, regulatory, and compliance matters; and other operational functions. Williams received an MBA from UC Berkeley.

Chief Information Officer Rosio Alvarez is responsible for business systems, high-performance computing, cybersecurity, telephony, and networking at Berkeley Lab. Before joining the Lab in 2007, she served as associate chancellor for IT at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, overseeing the computational services for 30,000 users; and as a business school faculty member at the University of Washington and the University of Massachusetts. Alvarez has been published in a number of leading academic journals, and received a B.S., MBA, and Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Chief Human Resources and Diversity Officer Michelle Scanlon is responsible for leading all aspects of the human resources function at Berkeley Lab, including Talent Acquisition & Management; Diversity, Equity & Inclusion; Compensation & Benefits; Learning & Development; Employee & Labor Relations; and Employee Engagement. Prior to joining the Lab in 2017, she held senior HR executive positions at two successful, high-growth Silicon Valley technology companies, and served as a strategic HR business partner at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore. Her experience also includes strategic planning and implementation of business-driven Employee Success and Diversity & Inclusion programs. Scanlon received a Bachelor of Arts from UC Santa Barbara, and an MBA from Golden Gate University.

Reva A. Nickelson

Facilities Division Director Reva Nickelson is responsible for Berkeley Lab’s facility and utility operations and maintenance; protective services (fire, security, and emergency management); and services such as transportation, food services, custodial services, and design. She has over 27 years of experience in safety and operations management, project management, and engineering, with expertise in multiple fields, including facility management, construction, fabrication, power management, roads and grounds, environmental remediation, environmental stewardship, applied research, technology development, technology testing/evaluation, transportation, training, fire, security, and emergency services. Before joining the Lab, Nickelson won a Lifetime Achievement Award at Idaho National Laboratory for her multiple patents in the field of subsurface barriers. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Idaho.

A trained chemist, Environment/Health/Safety (EHS) Division Director Jim Floyd has over 35 years of experience in private industry and the Department of Energy, including his tenure as an EHS Division group leader responsible for a variety of technical programs, such as dosimetry, radiological safety, industrial hygiene, information management information systems, mixed and radioactive wastes, decontamination and decommissioning programs, and accelerator safety at the Advanced Light Source. Prior to joining the Lab, he specialized in environmental biochemistry and served as a lab operations manager at an private radiological testing lab. He has served as the director of the EHS Division since 2014.

Director of Institutional Assurance & Integrity Theresa Triplett oversees Berkeley Lab’s contract assurance systems, quality management, and ethics and integrity programs, and serves as the deputy institutional official for Research Integrity and Human and Animal Research protection. Prior to joining the Lab in 2009 as a program manager responsible for the development and implementation of policies, processes, and training for the Laboratory Issues Management Program, she served in various roles at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco as the district business continuity manager, enterprise risk management program manager, and cash services supervisor. She also served as a branch manager during her 15-year tenure at World Savings. Triplett earned her BBA from Wichita State University.

Project Management Officer Kem Robinson oversees Berkeley Lab’s project portfolio and project management framework, including its certified earned value management system, with the key objective of increasing the success and alignment of projects that support the Lab’s scientific mission. A senior scientist in the Engineering Division, Robinson has been at the Lab since 1999, serving as director of the Engineering Division, principal deputy of the Accelerator and Fusion Research Division, and deputy for General Sciences Projects before assuming the role of Laboratory Project Management Officer full time in 2015. He received a bachelor’s from Brigham Young University, and a Ph.D. in physics from Stanford University.

Senior Advisor to the Chief Operating Officer Ellen Ford joined Berkeley Lab in 2002 as the business manager for the Physical Biosciences Division, managing financial and administrative operations for the division. She was a key contributor to the Joint BioEnergy Institute’s proposal development and submission. During her time at the Laboratory, she has contributed to numerous initiatives that focused on the development and implementation of improved business practices and procedures, several of which were in partnership with UC Berkeley. Prior to her work at Berkeley Lab, she was the director of Corporate Operations for Gap Inc.
